A climate of truth: Why honesty is essential to solving the polycrisis

A global polycrisis: Climate change as one symptom

Mike argued that climate change cannot be understood in isolation. Instead, it is one symptom of a much larger polycrisis encompassing biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, food system collapse, inequality, and political instability. He described humanity’s unprecedented impact on Earth’s fragile ecosystems in the Anthropocene era, where our technological power vastly exceeds the wisdom we have so far demonstrated in wielding it. 

He warned that humanity is like “kids running around the playground with machine guns,” lacking the maturity and self-restraint to prevent catastrophic damage. The consequence is an accelerating, interlinked crisis that threatens not only future generations but the lives and livelihoods of people alive today. 

Every business needs to ask: would a sustainable economy be a threat or an opportunity for us?

The role of business and commuting

Turning to the role of businesses and individuals, Mike argued that sustainable commuting is not just about cutting a few tonnes of carbon, it is about reshaping culture and influencing wider systems.  

He warned against relying solely on technology to solve the crisis: “The climate doesn’t care how much renewable energy we generate, only how little fossil fuel we burn.” This means businesses and individuals must also focus on reducing total energy demand, rethinking consumption, and prioritising local, community-based solutions. 

The power of honesty and critical thinking

A recurring theme of Mike’s talk was the importance of honesty and critical thinking. He called for businesses and individuals to avoid greenwash, to be transparent about the challenges they face, and to demand truth from politicians and the media. 

Trust is fundamental: “If someone misleads you, that is abuse.” Just as society rightly condemns harassment or exploitation, so too should it hold politicians and companies accountable for dishonesty. 

Mike used the Elisabeth Kübler-Ross grief curve to illustrate humanity’s psychological journey in responding to the crisis: from denial to anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance. “Only at acceptance can we begin to solve this crisis on its own terms,” he said. 

He noted that while people around the world overwhelmingly recognise the seriousness of climate change, they often underestimate their neighbours’ willingness to act. This collective hesitation delays urgently needed change. 

Solutions to the climate crisis exist

Despite the harsh realities, Mike was adamant that solutions are within reach. He highlighted the potential of: 

• Energy transition – cutting fossil fuel extraction and investing in renewables 
• Reducing total energy demand, particularly in transport and food systems 
• Transforming food systems, including reducing meat and dairy consumption 
• Strengthening global collaboration, empathy, and critical thinking 
• Investing in local, sustainable commuting options that enhance quality of life 

We need a global cultural tipping point, and we all have to stand up for it now.

Mike stressed that climate change solutions must be rooted in truth and honest, accompanied by courage and bold action. He urged delegates to challenge unsustainable practices, hold leaders to account and push for honesty and integrity at every level of society. 

His message: we are not powerless. We are one tribe, and by working together, we can move beyond denial, create systemic change, and build a fairer, safer, more sustainable world.
