Many organisations publicly commit to sustainability, yet internally, ESG initiatives can still struggle to secure funding, resources and executive support. That disconnect can be frustrating for sustainability professionals, but it doesn’t necessarily mean boards are unwilling to invest. More often, it reflects the reality that every proposal competes alongside other commercial priorities, from operational performance and financial pressures to organisational risk and long-term growth. Understanding that context is the first step towards building stronger boardroom conversations.
Boards Buy Outcomes
One of the strongest messages from the webinar is that sustainability proposals should be presented in the same way as any other strategic investment. Executive teams are looking for initiatives that solve business problems, create measurable value and can be delivered successfully. Environmental benefits remain important, but they need to be connected to wider organisational objectives to gain meaningful support.

Another key takeaway is that successful communication depends on understanding your audience. Finance leaders are focused on financial risk and return. Operations teams are concerned with continuity and disruption. HR thinks about people, while CEOs balance long-term strategy and organisational performance.
One simple question helps bring those different perspectives into focus, what keeps this person awake at 3 am? Understanding the answer allows the same proposal to be introduced in a way that reflects the priorities of the person sitting across the table.
