Key outcomes so far
Making sustainable transport the default – London Gatwick has used carpooling to support a cultural shift in how staff travel, supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
Priority car-share bays have been introduced across London Gatwick’s staff car parks, giving car sharers a visible presence and access to prominent, conveniently located spaces.
Financial and social benefits for employees – one London Gatwick employee estimated she saves £90 – £100 a month through Liftshare.
Success is a measurable carbon reduction, but it's also a cultural change. In the long run, we want staff to think of sustainable transport options as a default and not just an alternative.

Supporting More Sustainable Staff Travel
London Gatwick is a major international gateway and local employer, with around 25,000 staff working on site. Sustainability is embedded in the airport’s Decade of Change targets, including its ambition to become a net zero airport for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
With staff commuting representing part of its wider emissions challenge, London Gatwick partnered with Mobilityways to better understand how its employees travel to work and where there is potential to support more sustainable choices.
This insight has helped London Gatwick identify opportunities for behaviour change and put targeted support in place. Through Liftshare in the Mobilityways app, employees have been able to find colleagues travelling similar routes and share their journeys, making carpooling a more accessible option for the daily commute while helping to reduce associated emissions.
London Gatwick is supporting uptake through regular communications and engagement across teams at the airport, helping more employees understand the benefits of lift-sharing and consider it as part of their commute. This ongoing approach supports London Gatwick’s ambition to increase sustainable travel and reduce the emissions associated with staff commuting.
We were looking for a strategic partner that we could work with across data, across insights, and with real expertise in behavioural change.
