Understanding Commuting Potential

Mills & Reeve is a law firm with 1,400 staff, that is committed to its people, clients and the planet. Its net zero targets have been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Through working with Mobilityways, Mills & Reeve has accurately measured commuting emissions, establishing that it accounted for 20% of their total carbon footprint and that their second largest emissions profile is travel and commuting. Based on this information, they piloted a project to better understand the ways their people travel to work and introduce ways to reduce commuting emissions.

Starting at the firm’s Norwich office, it was found that 10% of colleagues were already carpooling, with 28% living within proximity of 10 Liftshare matches. Given this potential for lift-sharing, and the relative lack of public transport provision to the office, a Liftshare community has been highlighted as a potential way to cut commuting emissions.

Using CommuteIQ, Mobilityways enabled Mills & Reeve to understand sustainable options available by postcode, and Travel Surveys uncovered attitudes to sustainable commuting options. This information has been used at the Norwich office to drive a 7% drop in commuting emissions between 2023 and 2024, with an increase in walking, car-sharing, hybrid vehicle use and bus travel. Similar projects have since been rolled out across all seven Mills & Reeve offices.

The data is also used to create office profiles that inform relocations situated for the best public transport links. Mills & Reeve has ambitions to create a commuting dashboard for each office and have a leaderboard.

Being able to provide staff with a list of activities the firm is doing to reduce emissions helps them talk to clients with authenticity about how Mills & Reeve is going to achieve its net zero target.
