In the past, before Mobilityways, we were striving towards our targets a bit more as a scattergun approach. Now that we've got Mobilityways and the Commuter Emissions reporting and we've seen the improvements, we're getting better at our targeting.

Facing Ambitious Targets Head On

Northern Care Alliance chose Mobilityways as its strategic partner for commuting data solutions and consultancy in response to the statutory requirement for NHS England to decarbonise by 2045, and Manchester Integrated Care Services’ net-zero target of 2038. The Alliance’s Green Plan lays out its aim to reduce the emissions it can directly control by 80% by 2032 at the latest, and all emissions it can influence by 80% by 2039. The staff commute was highlighted specifically in the Green Plan as an area they could target.

In its Green Plan, the Alliance laid out a desire for “Accelerating modal shift to public and active transport – encouraging much more walking, cycling and public transport use for our journeys”, and “Decarbonising Road Transport – ending the use of diesel and petrol combustion engines and greater use of electric or hydrogen fuelled vehicles.”

The Trust has introduced a variety of parking and sustainability measures previously, including the introduction of walking and cycling provision, but Mobilityways’ targeted approach has allowed for a clearer strategy and significant improvement in emissions reduction.

We can now very clearly understand our employee's commuting habits, to implement key changes that will cut numbers of vehicles on site. We've put in place further plans for Liftshare communities to reduce driving alone, plus given data to local transport providers to support the planning of the wider transport network.

Liftshare communities, that enable employees to more easily find journey matches and authenticate their trips, which is used for permit allocation

Driving alone has decreased by 8% points (+2% EV use, -10% ICE use)

Bus usage has increased by 5% points

Active travel has increased by 3% points total (+2% cycle, +1% walk)

Success in its most basic form has looked like empty parking spaces. In terms of individual car use, it's 8% reduction. I can see colleagues who are walking from the tram stop, colleagues who are cycling in, we've got colleagues who are changing their journeys and are working flexibly.
